 -  You Surprised Me -

In Anxiety

Put Your loving arms around me,
and tell my troubled heart to be still.
Do not let my anxious flutter
drown the gentle whisper of Your love.

I need You, my strength,
I need You.

I do not know how to begin,
or even what to say.
One thing I know,
one thing my whole being tells me:
I am anxious, troubled, restless.
My heart is heavy,
my body tense, my hands cold and sweaty.
My speech is rushed,
trying to say a hundred things at once.
I want to rush here and there,
reach out to all the answers I need,
and find the peace my inmost being craves for.

Tell my heart to be still.
Let me relax in Your presence.
May my mind and body —
every fibre of my being —
be softened by the gentle showers of Your mercy.

I do not know what I need;
You do.
In my anxious search I fret and fume,
and run around in circles,
while You wait silently nearby,
infinitely patient, eager to help me,
and with a power beyond my need.

You are at the heart of the storm,
the unshakable tower of strength
where I can take shelter.
Hold me tenderly for a while,
and teach my heart to be still.

Wait with me and calm my anxious mind,
until I am flooded with Your peace.
May Your peace soothe me, fill me, heal me,
and make me radiant with joy.
